20 Facts About Food That Will Probably Mess You Up A Little

It keeps us busy during the day. It gives us pleasure. It gives us comfort. It makes us fat. Don’t we all love food? But, there are a lot of thing about food that we don’t know. Now, we won’t go in to deep into conspiracy theories about food and the industry (you can check Netflix for that though), but the following 20 facts will probably amaze you. And mabye make you never eat some things again.

1. We are born craving sugar.

You wouldn’t expect it, but we were all born with a sweet tooth. Studies have shown that newly born babies have a distinct preference for sweet flavours in comparison to salty or bitter flavours. It’s not your fault you like candy as much as you do.

2. Chocolate once was used as money.

The Aztecs used to use cocao beans as trading goods. Now we just pay for chocolate. Life isn’t fair.

3. There is no such thing as a ‘Baby Carrot’.

Despite their adorable name, baby carrots are made from imperfect carrots that have been sliced, peeled, and rounded into smaller pieces.

4. Strawberries are not berries. Avacado’s are.

Technically speaking, a berry is a “fleshy fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower containing one or more seeds on the inside of the flesh”. Avocados fit this definition, but strawberries, which develop from multiple ovaries and have seeds on the outside, don’t.

5. Carrots are purple.

The Dutch are responsible for turning the carrot orange. In the late 17th century they cultivated mutated strains of the purple variety. Purple looks cool though.
